The theme for Pride Week 2004 was: “Bursting with Fruit Flavours”.

Grand Marshal George Hislop was a longtime community activist and hero. He was an integral part of the early beginnings of Toronto’s first gay rights group, the University of Toronto Homophile Association. He also served on the board of Directors of the AIDS Committee of Toronto, the Hassle Free Clinic, and recently won an important court victory for CPP survivors pensions in a national class action.

The Honoured Group for 2004 was The Lesbian and Gay Community Appeal Foundation (LGCA). The LGCA has been a cornerstone of Toronto’s LGBTTIQ community for almost 25 years, raising funds to support more than 767 projects that have benefited countless individuals, groups and organizations.

Carol Thames

Carol is honoured to serve on the Board of Directors for Pride Toronto. She brings a vast employment experiences working in the non-profit sector, including 15 years in senior leadership roles. Her Board governance work spans organizations such as Rapport Credit Union, the Bill 7 Award, and Community One Foundation. Carol is the current Executive Director with Fife House Foundation.

As a facilitator, community advocate, and artist, Carol have led workshops in academic institutions and community-based organizations, contributed to initiatives like the Youth/Elder Project, and as a panelist at The Enchanté Network Conference.

Her work is grounded in equity and social justice that is engrained in a human rights-based approach. I am deeply committed to dismantling systemic oppression and building inclusive communities where everyone can thrive.

Victor Perez Amado

Victor Perez-Amado is an Associate Professor at the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Urban and Regional Planning. Perez-Amado grew up in Caracas, Venezuela and lived in Miami and Boston before settling in Toronto. He is trained as an architect and urban designer, graduating from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the University of Florida.

His academic research centres on aging-in-place studies and multigenerational housing, including in 2SLGBTQI+ communities. These projects include Aging Together and Queering Home, a partnership with Egale-Canada. Before joining TMU, he worked on various master plans and designs for independent and assisted living, focusing on older adults with disabilities in Boston. On another scale of engagement with the city, Perez-Amado is interested in activating public spaces by designing and building interactive and educational installations in the public realm. His methodology is based on theories of placemaking, where he explores prototyping, visualization, activation, and community engagement. These include installations along King Street West, Ontario Place, Winter Stations in the Beaches, and at the Toronto Climate Action Hubs. His work has been exhibited at the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, the World Urban Pavilion in Regent Park, and the Harvard GSD Grounded Visionaries, among others.

leZlie lee kam – Co-Chair

I identify as a World Majority, brown, Carib, trini 🇹🇹, Indo, Chinese, callaloo, differently-abled, Jurassic, bionic, DYKE Elder/Rainbow 🌈 Senior.

I am a community activist, educator, connector, story-teller, knowledge-keeper, instigator and sometime actor.

Currently a co-chair of the board of Pride Toronto. I sit on the 2SLGBTQI+ Community Advisory Board for the city of Toronto, the Expert Panel for the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and the Client Advisory Board for Women’s Health in Women’s Hands Community Health Centre.

I live and work from an anti-oppression, intersectional, intergenerational and pro-Indigenous perspective. My purpose is to agitate, disrupt, infiltrate and respectfully cause trouble in my advocacy for the Equity/Equality and Human Rights of ALL 2S-LGBTQI+ folX, as the Queen 👑 of Rainbow 🌈 Seniors in Canada.

I enjoy dim sum, doubles, dancing and a hot “lime” any time.

Troy Dunn

Troy has been closely connected in the Canadian retail & tech industry for over 30 years. In 2005, Troy joined Apple to launch Apple Retail in Canada and continues to lead Apple Retail, which includes retail stores, small and medium business teams, and in-store educational offerings. With stores across Canada, from Halifax to Vancouver, Troy continues to stay connected to communities and local issues across the country.

He has a passion for I&D work and has become a leader and ally across many different diversity networks at Apple including: Pride@Apple for North America. He is best known for leading the retail growth that Apple has seen in Canada, for his ability to connect with his teams, and for his passion for his country and community. Most recently he also served on the Retail Council of Canada, Canadian Council of Indigenous Business and in Spring 2025 will be joining the board of Digital Marketing Sector Council.

Troy is proud to be Indigenous and has spent many years on a personal journey of reflection, education, and understanding which he instills in his four children Brooke, Bella, Saxon and Soren.

Brittan Hudson

Brittan Hudson is an Afro-Caribbean community developer with over a decade of experience in program design and equity-focused facilitation. They are the Director of Programs at the Enchanté Network, Canada’s largest network of 2SLGBTQI+ organizations.

Brittan holds a Master of Theological Studies in Development from the University of Toronto, where they received the 2025 Bishop Edward W. Scott Prize in Christian Social Issues. Their thesis focused on intersectionality and faith formation, emphasizing Afrocentric approaches to spiritual care for queer and trans Christians.

Their work centers on building equitable systems for BIPOC and 2SLGBTQI+ communities, grounded in decolonization, disability justice, and diasporic Black knowledge.

Nirmalan Vijeyakumar

Nirmalan is a queer South Asian man, having grown up in Toronto, with strong roots in the Malvern community of Scarborough. Nirmalan is currently a Project Manager with the City of Toronto and holds a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton University.

Nirmalan has contributed his time to the 2SLGBTQ+ community in a number of ways, from providing event support for Pride Toronto to providing refugee settlement services for Rainbow Railroad. Nirmalan is keen to advocate for equity-deserving groups and has previously volunteered with the not-for-profit group, TTCriders. With his help, TTC riders was successful in advocating for a number of changes for transit users, including the introduction of two-hour transfers. Nirmalan has experience as a media spokesperson, working on policies, managing projects, and lobbying government officials.

Grant Gonzales - Chair Emeritus

Grant is the Chair Emeritus of Pride Toronto’s Board of Directors, serving since February 2021, and has served as a Director on the Board since September 2020.

His governance priorities include strategic planning, financial oversight, policy development, and reviews, board management and coordination, engaging in meaningful advocacy, supporting year-round community programming, and providing strategic advice to the Executive Director.

He is a government and stakeholder relations professional, with 10 years of experience. An active community member, Grant is a former President of the Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre and is a Co-Founder of the Filipino Canadian Political Association. A civically engaged resident, he was a 2021 CivicAction DiverseCity Fellow.

Grant participates in several 2SLGBTQI+ athletic leagues, including Downtown Dodgeball, Dodgeball Society, and the Toronto United Flag Football League. He is dad to Miko, a Samoyed troublemaker.

Osmel B. Guerra Maynes – Treasurer

Osmel is a Black queer man of Latin American descent and a dedicated social justice activist with over ten years of experience in the not-for-profit sector, focusing on membership-driven environments and advancing the inclusion of marginalized voices. He immigrated to Canada in 2003 to pursue a Political Science degree at Carleton University and has since worked across Ontario, British Columbia, and the Yukon with 2SLGBTQ+ organizations, particularly within the HIV sector.

Currently the Director of Philanthropy, Community & Engagement at HQ Toronto, Osmel combines strategic leadership, fundraising expertise, and policy development to drive impactful social programming. He is committed to amplifying QTBIPOC voices and creating inclusive spaces, offering anti-oppression and Queer competency training to promote equity and lasting change.

Amber Ye (She/They)

Amber brings over 15 years of experience in law and governance, and currently works for the Ontario Public Service. In her branch, she co-chairs the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (IDEA) Committee.

As a Christian, Amber understands the challenges youth from religious communities may face in reconciling their faith with sexual orientation. She has worked to create a secure, inclusive environment for queer individuals from diverse religious backgrounds and has led impactful initiatives for the staff pride network within the Ontario Public Service. Her early experience working at a medical center in Toronto gave her a keen awareness of the medical, social, and legal challenges still facing the 2SLGBTQI+ communities today.

Amber currently has seven wonderful nephews and nieces and loves spending time with them. She is an avid traveler, having explored over 25 countries. These experiences have taught her the importance of empathy, compassion, and the shared humanity that connects us all. She believes that no matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to live an authentic life we can be proud of.

Gabriel Jarquin (he/him)

Born in Nicaragua and raised in Canada, Gabriel Jarquin is a passionate advocate for the 2SLGBTQI+ community and a dedicated HIV/AIDS activist. Living with HIV for over a decade, Gabriel uses his platform as a National Ambassador for the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR) to combat stigma, educate others, and inspire change, proudly sharing the message that ‘HIV doesn’t slow me down.’

An accomplished marathon runner and HOKA athlete, Gabriel has completed 11 marathons internationally, including four Boston Marathons, with a fifth coming this April. His love for running has taken him across the globe, combining his passion for sport with his love of travel. Gabriel’s journey has been featured on the covers of Canadian Running, Altitude Sports, and iRun magazines, as well as in numerous podcasts and documentaries, amplifying his message of resilience and empowerment.

Through his advocacy and lived experiences, Gabriel strives to uplift and celebrate the diversity of voices within the 2SLGBTQI+ community, using his passion for sport, travel, and storytelling to inspire others.

Maria Diaz (She/Her)

Maria grew up in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and later built a life in Canada as queer immigrant and parent. Her personal experiences have provided her with firsthand insight into the challenges faced by underrepresented communities, inspiring a lifelong commitment to advocacy and to creating spaces where everyone feels respected, supported, and empowered.

As a paralegal with over 10 years of experience, Maria has witnessed how systemic inequities perpetuate injustice, further feeling her dedication to collaborating with and amplifying the voices of those who face challenges navigating the legal system. She has worked extensively to support LGBTQ+ individuals, refugees, and newcomers, focusing on addressing systemic barriers and promoting equity. Her professional background spans criminal law and immigration, with additional experience gained through various roles at Legal Aid Ontario.

Maria believes in the power of empathy and collective action to drive meaningful change. Joining Pride Toronto’s Board represents an exciting opportunity for her to contribute her advocacy and community-building expertise to an organization committed to fostering inclusivity and equity.
